What Is an Age Gap?
An age gap is simply the difference in time between the birth dates of two people. It's most commonly calculated in completed years, but for more precision (especially for babies, siblings, or detailed records), it is often expressed in years, months, and days.
How to Calculate Age Difference
To calculate the difference manually:
- Start from the older person's birth date.
- Count the full years until the younger person's birth date.
- Count the remaining full months.
- Count the remaining days.
This gives you a precise "calendar age" difference, which accounts for leap years and the varying lengths of months (28, 30, or 31 days).

FAQ
How do you decide who is older?
We compare the two dates directly: the earlier birth date is the older person. If both dates are the same, the age gap is 0.
What is the best age gap for couples?
There isn’t a universal “best” age gap. While many couples are close in age on average, the age difference itself doesn’t determine love or happiness. What matters more is whether you’re aligned on life stage and core topics: values, communication, future plans (family, living situation, finances, caregiving responsibilities), boundaries, respect, and how you handle conflict.
Research also suggests age gap is more about correlation than destiny. For example, a longitudinal study on marital satisfaction found that differently aged couples can start out more satisfied, but satisfaction can change differently over time depending on the age gap—this doesn’t mean any specific couple will be unhappy, only that average patterns differ. A U.K. official statistics article also reports no strong association between age difference and divorce outcomes.

What is the total days value useful for?
Total days is handy for detailed comparisons (like tracking milestones, training cycles, or anniversaries) and avoids confusion about how long “a few months” really is.
